THE SACRAMENT OF THE ANOINTING OF THE SICK IN THE LIGHT OF THE APOSTOLIC LETTER DESIDERIO DESIDERAVI OF POPE FRANCIS

EMPHASES OF A THEOLOGICAL-RITUAL-MYSTAGOGICAL REREADING

Abstract

This paper aims to re-read the theology, rite and mystagogy of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick in the light of the inspirations of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Letter Desiderio Desideravi. These reflections of the papal magisterium constitute an exhortation to rediscover the beauty of the truth of the Christian celebration manifested in the theology and rituality of the sacraments. Applied to Holy Anointing, they bring profound emphases to be valued in its sacramental practice: the Sacrament as participation in Jesus’ desire to enter into communion with every suffering sick person; Anointing as the Lord’s special redeeming touch; the union of the passion of the sufferer with the sufferings of Christ and their corridor dimension; and the configuration of the priest and the sick person to the feelings of the compassionate and suffering Lord. These reflections can contribute to a profound and mystagogical experience of this sacrament, consolidating its rediscovery as a sign of life, healing, salvation, hope and eternity.
