Abstract

Christian Mystical Theology owes the thought of Gregory of Nyssa – not only his works, but also his life as he experiences the journey he describes. The Cistercian monk William of Saint-Thierry is among those who benefited from his contributions. Theological thought of 12th Century was enriched by the access to Greek philosophical and theological writings and, by using them, William of Saint-Thierry offers a synthesis of Eastern and Western theology. This paper presents the thought of William of Saint-Thierry concerning the desire to see God – especially from his Exposition on the Song of Songs. This reading aims to highlight the influence of spiritual journey of Gregorian writings: Homilies on the Song of Songs and Life of Moses, as well as pointing out the relevance of such approaches to theological reflection.
